A letter from John Huber. January 2017
Three years since the tragedy, Carly and Sophie continue to grow and thrive as they move through adolescence. Great family, friends and community have all been critical contributors to their many successes.
Sophie was a volunteer counselor at a kid’s camp nearby and also participated as a camper at another camp, not so close by! She really enjoyed her first overnight camp experience and plans to attend again this year! Sophie also continues to have many good friends and is well liked by her peers. Sophie has had a very stable year, both at school and at home. She gets very high marks and has shown immense growth both physically and emotionally. She’s almost taller than CJ although my money remains on CJ to win in arm wrestling. Sophie would get the blue ribbon in watercolor painting, however. 🙂
Carly has a positive and hopeful view about her future as we work on her college plans. She is looking forward to visiting Chicago this Spring to tour several campuses. She continues to receive high marks and is pursuing her IB diploma. Carly has had a very successful year with her friends and family as well. Carly got her driver’s license on her birthday in July, which has provided her with new found freedom! Carly is involved with school activities, including serving in the Natural Helpers Club as a peer counselor. She was elected captain of the golf team after picking up the sport just over two years ago. She babysits regularly in the neighborhood and goes out with friends weekly.
Travel continues to be a very good way for our family to develop shared experiences and get away from our phones and distractions. We went to France and Italy for spring break which turned out to be an incredible memory for everyone. Florence and Paris were highlights for sure. We also decided to mix up the Holiday pattern and head to the Bahamas for Christmas through New Year’s with some close friends and extended family. We also went to northern Wisconsin for our annual family trip. Carly and Sophie have become good travelers and have learned great coping skills in the process!
Kate graduated from high school (and is now a HAWKEYE 🙂 ), so we are down to 3 girls in the house. Anna is a sophomore at Carleton and continues to play soccer for the Knights. Violet is a sophomore in high school and made all conference in Tennis. All three girls do very well in school.
We are very proud of all these young women.
Please visit us if you are ever in the twin cities area.
Love to all!
